Tamar Hidegh Registered Social Worker
I began my career working with individuals facing chronic substance use and mood disorders. Over time, I observed that many of these issues were deeply connected to unresolved trauma. Trauma can be any experience that threatens an individual’s sense of safety, not just what may be considered “significant” by external standards. Recognizing this connection, I shifted my focus to helping individuals safely revisit traumatic events, bringing them to the surface and processing them therapeutically.
I believe there is no one-size-fits-all approach to trauma treatment. It’s crucial to address trauma both through talk therapy and somatic interventions, as both are necessary for comprehensive healing. The brain plays a critical role in how trauma is processed. When trauma occurs, the brain’s amygdala, which detects threats, becomes hyperactive. This heightened sensitivity leads to an ongoing sense of fear, even in safe situations. The hippocampus, which helps us differentiate between past and present events, can become impaired, making it difficult to process traumatic memories and leading to intrusive thoughts and flashbacks. Additionally, the prefrontal cortex, which helps regulate emotions, may become underactive, making emotional control more difficult. These brain changes can lead to physical symptoms like chronic pain, tension, and difficulty sleeping. Individuals may also experience emotional dysregulation, feeling overwhelmed by everyday tasks. This is why I integrate both cognitive and somatic techniques in therapy. For some, talk therapy, including Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), helps address negative thought patterns. However, trauma is not only stored in the mind but in the body as well. Somatic techniques like breathing exercises, meditation, and vagus nerve activation are essential for healing, as they help release stored trauma and regulate the nervous system. In some cases, somatic interventions are necessary before talk therapy can be effective. Once individuals reconnect with their bodies and release stored trauma, they often gain the emotional regulation needed to process their experiences cognitively. I also utilize narrative therapy to help clients reconstruct negative inner narratives formed after trauma, allowing them to reclaim their identity and move toward healing.
Psychedelic-assisted therapy has also proven to be a powerful tool in trauma recovery. It can facilitate empathy, self-compassion, and allow individuals to process trauma from a “safe bubble” perspective. Psychedelics can help release frozen emotions, making it possible for clients to reconnect with their feelings and work through their trauma in a new way.
In my practice, I frequently work with veterans, first responders, and others dealing with PTSD, complex PTSD (cPTSD), and moral injury. However, I welcome individuals from all walks of life who are seeking healing. Trauma is not a personal failing—it’s a natural response to overwhelming experiences. With the right support, healing is not only possible but achievable.

I am a psychologist with a psychoanalytic, relational, attachment orientation. My work has included a strong focus on trauma as well as mood disorders, relationship issues, work-life balance, individual self-fulfillment, and many other issues. I have worked with all ages, sexual orientation, gender identification, and the wide range of ethnicities that greater Toronto enjoys. I have been in private practice for over 25 years, with affiliations with the Toronto Psychoanalytic Society, the Hincks Dellcrest Family and Child Centre (now part of the Hospital for Sick Children), the Peel Board of Education, and multiple other organizations. I follow Rinzai and Soto Zen traditions. I am grateful for my human and animal companions.
Looking back years ago, when I first took psychedelics, I had no idea what a life-changing event it would be. I took more. In that place and time, it was legal. Now that psychedelics are becoming legal in Ontario, it feels like I have come full circle and can bring my trainings and experiences to fruition. After a Toronto mentorship in psychedelics, I attended and graduated from the 8-month intensive Naropa Center for Psychedelic Studies, a branch of Naropa University, a fully-accredited university in Colorado. I have been training and working with psychedelics for about three years.
With ATMA CENA, I have a like-minded community to engage in this promising, sometimes joyful, sometimes deeply challenging work. I look forward to the opportunity to work with you.
